| Special natural monument “Akanko’s Marimo” |

Marimo is a kind of green algae that lives in water.
Akanko’s Marimo was discovered by Takiya Kawakami in 1897 and he named it Marimo because of
Its round shape(the word “Marimo” is composed with two Kanji characters,”毬藻” which means
“Bounce ball” and “Waterweed”). It is designated as natural monument in 1921
and then became special natural monument in 1952 by the Japanese government.
Marimo is classified to the highest level of 1st extinction misgiving kind on the red list,
which was officially announced by the government in 1997.

Hot spring of Akanko is heated water, which underground ingredients have melted into the water by the volcanic source of heat. There are accommodating facilities and public baths where you are able to go into hot spring in Akanko Spa.

Ainu are indigenous people who live in Hokkaido by coexisting and living together with nature, also they lived outside of Hokkaido in old times, and their superb peculiar culture has been inherited. The original Ainu culture such as language, cooking, and dancing are inherited by Ainu people in present days, and traditional preservation activity is gaining force. Especially, oral literature called “Yukara” attracts a great deal of attention as excellentt literature since the old days.
